The Gamemaker and Opera GX deal is very scary

So I just found out that to export a Gamemaker project I need to have a Opera GX account unless I pay. Opera GX is confirmed spyware so I don’t want to make a account for it. I have only learned Gamemaker for two weeks so should I delete Gamemaker, pay for it, or bite the bullet and make an account? I literally only use Gamemaker because of what happened with Unity so it is very sad that Gamemaker might have shady people behind it too. I hate Unity so much…

The allegations about Opera GX being spyware are regarding its vpn routing through chinese servers - which isnt confirmed either (not like other browsers arent stealing your data either). Regardless, just making an opera account puts you at zero risk and doesnt require you to use any Opera browser either.

You have to pay regardless to export games to most platforms including PC. The free export option with opera is a browser based service that you can submit your games to.

If gamemaker seems to suit your interests I would recommend sticking with it. Its a very useful tool.

Its been over 3 years since this happen. Just make your game dude.

a) not Opera GX, but rather Opera account

b) Opera is a publicly traded company in the US

c) it’s not a confirmed spyware

Anyone who complains about opera GX buying gamemaker (or really the company that owns them) should remember that GM was about to die. Now it’s getting meaningful updates the fastest it has ever been.

Opera GX is confirmed spyware

Lol, by who? By Chromium and Firefox?

Take off the tin foil hat and stop believing every dumb thing that you read on the Internet. :man_facepalming:

You’ll be fine. While Opera is owned by Chinese interests it’s still a for profit company in a field were some expectations exist for web browsers. It’s a fairly good browser overall and as safe as any Chromium based browser.

If you don’t want to use it, GX Games works on any Chromium browser so you can just use it as sparingly as possible. You also don’t have to use the GX exporter, but it is extremely useful during development to just share a link to an unlisted game for testing. The only other engine I can think of that has this option is maybe Construct 3.

Just make a burner email

nah i use opera gx, this ain’t spyware. wanna know how i’m not a sponsor? i am pissed as hell cuz i had to reinstall it and it got rid of all my extensions and i got PISSED and i’m sad as hell now. if it’s spyware, idc

:cross_mark:opera is not confirmed spyware

Confirmed spyware? By who? When? Any article in a credible media outlet or just YouTube vids?

opera not spyware lmaooo

my own college uses this gamemaker for beginner courses in gaming. I’m sure it’s fine for a simple few time use. If anyone is so worried use a new alt email… simple

Also, it spies you as much as USA does with Facebook, so you’re safe unless you are a CIA agent talking about toppling China on your browser xD

“Just talk about making your game dude - but we all know you will be in the 99.5% of people who start a game project and never finish it.”

FIFY

correction to B and C, Opera norway is the parent company of opera and is in Norway, but Opera Norways parent company is chinese, specifically. Kunlun Tech. Which following the Chinese Communist Party rules means the CCP can request data from the service at any point. and the VPN is a proxy sending all the browser details to Opera Norway, which again is owned by Kunlun Tech. which is why OP is having concerns over spyware. also it is confirmed to send data to get your location. if i can find the video i will paste it below but it sends multiple requests to a geotagging service to find your exact location. : )

im gonna debunk B and C. Operas company is called Opera Norway, which is registered in Norway. and Opera Norway’s Parent Company is called Kunlun Tech, a chinese company. and in china, the CCP can request data from said companys services at any point. and C, It is 1 Chinese which is sadly a problem due to the CCP. 2 it has been confirmed to be able to get your full location. also it usually takes up more ram then other browsers due to the bloated browser. ( here is some videos right here about said shadiness: https://youtu.be/NV8akIgfDqQ?si=OyN4udv6HQlh2o1K https://youtu.be/kLuWq3dHdMI?si=41IvDIZ9i3lehitc https://youtu.be/ihnJt6nFXZY?si=4MabOXET1anVCPud )

I bet Opera forced you to say that

I heard it was owned by a gambling company before, is that true?
