I’m very new at this so please bear with me. I bought a DS218j and it’s been great except I only get 5MB/s or so out of it when downloading though my VPN. If I disconnect the VPN, transfer speed immediately increases to 12.5MB/s which is 100% of my 100/100 connection. On my PC I get 100% speed downloading the same torrent regardless of using VPN or not.
I have set up NordVPN as a OpenVPN profile in the NAS. I’m using Download Station with default settings. The ports are forwarded in my router. Firewall on NAS is off for now.
I just can’t figure out what could cause this issue. I’d appreciate any input.
Update: I upgraded to the beefier 218+ model with Intel CPU and now get full speed over VPN. Seems like a h/w limitation of the j model. As an added bonus I can now run my Plex server on my NAS! Totally worth it.

Not to mention where is your VPN connecting to? If you are connected to a location not even close to you geographically then your traffic has to actually go there first before coming to you. So yes it’s going to dramatically be slower. I connect my VPN to a close location to get some better performance.
Totally normal. VPN slows your speed by a a ton. That’s the price for privacy.
I’m also using DS218j with VPN (VPN.ac). My speeds are around 4-6 MB/s, but my internet connection is 300 Mbps, so the theoretical max is somewhere around 37 MB/s.
Even with a powerful machine, expect to loose at least 40% is your download speed.
Would upgrading to the DS218play make a difference? Or would I have to step up to the Intel based + model?
Agreed, it’s normal. I have a DS218 running Nord Openvpn and I get about 5 down.
I’ve made sure to connect to closest possible server so I’m covered there
I could accept that, except I get full speed when using VPN on my PC. It’s obviously not my VPN provider that is the bottleneck here but rather configuration, hardware or a combination of both on the NAS.
I only have anecdotal experience of getting fewer peers through the VPN but so far hasn’t been enough of an issue to investigate further

Then there you have it. It’s most probably the CPU not being poweful enough. That ARM CPUs are crap for everything except direct streaming content. That’s why I just ordered a new NAS (QNAP this time) far more powerful so I can mess with Docker, VM, Transcoding, etc etc

Its def your NAS CPU. I have near 0 loss (there is some) with Nord on my 918+ but we are talking about 1-5% max
