I have two rokus one is an old one that uses Ethernet the other is a new one with Wi-Fi. I have them both going through a vpn through the firewalla. The old one with Ethernet plays content fine. The new one with Wi-Fi won’t play. I am using the same vpn client for both of them in the firewalla settings. Does anyone know a reason why one is working and the other isn’t?
Is the wifi in AP or router mode?
I have had the same issue. I found that restarting the Roku once the VPN is setup will fix it.
Is the orbi in bridge mode or are doing double NAT on the traffic from the wireless Roku?
Are the two Rokus at the same firmware version?
How do you know the traffic for one isn’t going through the VPN?
Last, what are the DNS settings on the two devices? That can impact how the services see them if the DNS isn’t all routed through the VPN the same way for both.
The router is in AP mode. Both devices are connecting to the router.
I tried this and it didn’t work. I suppose I can try again.
The orbi is in bridge mode.
I don’t believe they are the same version one Roku is very old and the other is brand new.
I set them to both use the vpn in the firewalla settings. I’m not sure the one that doesn’t work isn’t using the vpn all I know is that the streams don’t work like the streams on the older one.
As far as I know Roku doesn’t let you edit the dns. Maybe the new one is tunneling and messing with the vpn?
What device is providing wifi to the new Roku?
And is the new Roku one which has an ethernet port? If so could you hardwire it just to test it that way?
You should be able to see all the flows from both devices. Since the Orbi is on bridge mode, DHCP and DNS should both come from the Firewalla.
Do you have the VPN set to force all traffic? What about as block mode? The newer one might be trying to load some content that is getting blocked causing it to look like the streams aren’t working.
I’m just throwing darts at this point and thinking of the things I would be checking to see if they make a difference.
I assume you are looking to tunnel the traffic over VPN for regional content reasons, but did you try putting that device in emergency mode just to see if it works normally or not without the VPN and any traffic restrictions?
The Wi-Fi is coming from an orbi router. Same with the Ethernet. I was trying them on the same tv which is right next to the main router. The new Roku is Wi-Fi only no Ethernet. It does have Ethernet through usb but I don’t have one of those wires to try.
I appreciate the suggestions and the help. I have it set to force dns over vpn and a vpn kill switch.
I’m not sure what emergency mode is. Can you explain more?
finally got a chance to try again. set it up in the default region and it works fine. I am wondering if the fact that it is wifi that is bothering it, but that doesn’t really make sense
For the device in question, at the bottom of the details page there is a slider labeled Emergency Access. This países all rules for that device that block access. It doesn’t change routing, so it should still use the VPN.
It following you about default region. But it could be a few different things. The newer device might have a newer version of the app that does more to try to prevent use over VPN. Or it could be something with the Orbi and DNS. I don’t know Orbi, are there any DNS interception settings or other security capabilities that might still be turned on.
I see. Emergency access is off.
