Question about Verizon’s digital secure VPN feature

Hello,

I am asking on behalf of a friend who does not use Reddit.

She has a Verizon phone family plan with her husband. Her phone is Galaxy S4.

Anyways, she is in a delicate situation which I will not get into because it’s not pertinent to this thread but does relate to my question.

If she were to download the Digital Secure app and use the built-in VPN service, she is worried that somehow her husband could still see her phone online and web activity if that makes sense?

I would think not since the entire premise of VPN is for privacy and security, but she wanted to know to be safe due to her situation she is in. (Don’t worry myself and some friends are working with her to make sure she is safe.)

Would appreciate any insight on it, thanks.

I would say it may be a better option to use a non-Verizon VPN service as her spouse may see that this service was added to the plan.

Even without VPN, no one on the account, not* even the owner can see what sites are being visited. The other issue is to make sure something like Verizon smart family is not installed to monitor sites being visited, but someone correct if I am wrong, access to the physical phone is needed.

Edit*

Won’t an S4 not be able to call unless on Wi-Fi?

Thank you for the reply, that could be considered as well.

Is Smart Family something that is usually added into a phone plan or is it a service implemented on individual phones?

It is a service added to the account, but access to the phone is required to set it up.

Going back to VPN, thing to remember is that from the Verizon account, only web categories can be seen, like shopping, social media, but not exact websites going to, so VPN is not going to make a difference.

If you want to be absolutely sure, then it is probably better to have a burner phone, like prepaid.

This is the best option. A burner prepaid phone kept on SILENT all the time.

Have you considered the google voice app? She could get a number from google voice and make calls and send texts through the app.

That may be a good idea too
