Possible account based tracking of VPN usage? Can no longer into this account using a VPN, but can use other accounts without issue.

All of the access, licensing, and service availability for these types of services is country or region based. Have you checked if Disney+ is meant to be unavailable where you live now?

If it isn’t available, using a VPN to access it does breach their terms and its why they’ll block it.

Considering how frequently VPNs are used for fraudulent purposes, every single service you use online is going to be at least logging VPN vs non-VPN usage. Most services just haven’t got around to enforcing anything on the back of that (yet). Its coming though.

I recently moved with my family overseas from the US for work and have been using ExpressVPN to access our annual plan in the US since Disney+ and Hotstar do not share the same account. This worked fine for a few months until this morning. None of my devices allowed me to login (error 73: attempting to access Disney+ from a country/region where service is currently unavailable). I tried a variety of servers in the US and even used a different VPN and verified my IP address location, still no luck. When I contacted Disney+ support, they said that a recent upgrade to their system security prevented active VPN users from accessing their account.

On a whim, I tried to login into a family member’s account back in the states via ExpressVPN and it worked without issue. My suspicion is that Disney+ is tracking how much a specific account is using a VPN and is just blocking some accounts with high (or maybe just exclusive) usage from known proxy servers. Either way, very frustrating. If Disney let you access Hotstar when you were overseas with your Disney+ account, I wouldn’t even be trying to use the VPN. I just want access to the content I paid for.

outside of the US it’s Hotstar by region so to protect the app itself it does this. makes perfect sense if you think about it. they are protecting against fencing their service.

Yep, if you try to go use Disney+ where I live now, you get redirected automatically to Disney Hotstar, which is a separate service. Unlike Netflix where you just get some different content when you are in a different country, you can’t even access it at all when you are in most of Asia without a VPN. Doesn’t matter where your billing address or permanent residence is.

Personally, I think using a VPN to use a service you already paid for is very different than using one to avoid paying or paying considerably less for the service.

If you moved permanently, see if support will provide a prorated refund you can use towards the available Disney+ Hotstar service

man I’m from Kazakhstan and am planning to buy a D+ subscription, if VPNs are blocked I’m fucked

I agree. You have a valid use case for using a VPN. I don’t know why Disney is blocking you and why you’re getting downvoted so much.

The problem is they have no way of knowing if your VPN usage is legitimate or not.

I’ll look at it as ‘account sharing’ https://www.zdnet.com/google-amp/home-and-office/home-entertainment/disney-password-sharing-crackdown-officially-begins/ and so if your household is in NY city, that’s where your IP is. Anything outside of NY city is considered outside household. I go on vacation for a month or longer and use ExpressVPN. But as a US resident I need to be careful. Remember reading that it depends on number of logins and you must login at least three times a month to your household ip. TRIED MINE: no connection from Europe to US. On mobile or FireTVstick.

VPNs have always been blocked by Disney+, and literally have been prohibited by the terms since the service launched.
