Nord VPN putting their prices in USD for Canadian customers with no way of letting them know until they receive a receipt for more than they originally expected to pay.
That’s wild, cause I just fell for that a few weeks ago. Nord emailed me a “deal” for ~$60 for 2 years and I was like damn, but it changed to ~$90 only AFTER the order was placed, and then it was more than $90 because I’m Canadian. They even charged me without me even clicking “place order”, it charged when I entered my cc info and clicked save. Had to contact CS for that refund.
AND, they also re-turned on auto renewal that I specifically turned off to prevent a charge, so I had to chat with CS AGAIN to get that charge refunded too, and this one was $140 for just one year on top of that.
What a joke. At least I can say their CS is willing to refund without much hassle.
How do you think I feel, I’m in Australia, I always think I’m getting a decent price, then boom, it’s 50% higher
Something doesn’t seem right. At 1.37 exchange $93.44USD would be $128.01CAD.
Cancel it, use Mullvad
That’s not the current exchange rate
Same thing in Australia. Considering the exchange rate between USD and AUD it’s even scummier here.
At least in Europe, the fact that they’re not using your currency is apparent, as no one there uses dollars.
Origin did the same to me. I was buying a game while in Pakistan. It said about 3000 Ruppees. The kicker was that they meant Indian Ruppees rather than Pakistani Ruppees, though that wasn’t written anywhere. When I bought the game I got a notification on my bank app that I had just spent about 7000 PKR (over double the price). They have my geo-location, they know I’m in Pakistan, and they should know that there’s more than one currency called “Ruppee”!
I think the issue is using the dollar sign $ rather than the currency code USD. While this wasn’t an issue for me (I’m in EU, in a country where the crown is the currency, so seeing $ automatically meant USD), I can understand Australians, Taiwanese, Mexicans, Canadians, or anyone else who uses $ as symbol for their own currency.
Easy fix to avoid any confusion would be using currency codes (AUD, CAD, MXN, TWD, USD, etc.) rather than $ in any such markets.
Dear customer, you’re suffering from ‘living too close to the US border’.
Any price shown on line should have currency shown. Just another “oversight” by authorities that benefits corporations.
Nord VPN is a cancer on internet right now…
They charged you GST and PST on your already taxed total. That looks more like a glitch then asshole design.
83.44*1.12= 93.44
93.44*1.12= 104.65
Update: I didn’t even initially notice that their sub-total calculation doesn’t even add up with the advertised price. I have cancelled my account with them for this reason. I had to ask for it 4 times. The CS representative kept copying/pasting explanations that the prices were USD, completely tone deaf to me explaining that this overcharge happens before CAD conversion. They said that they cancelled and that a refund will come but as of right now I still haven’t received a confirmation e-mail about it and my account still shows as active. If I get nothing by the end of day tomorrow I will get refund through my credit card company.
I switched to Mullvad, which turns out to be very similarly priced to what I would have actually paid for Nord and doesn’t have any of the corporate “trying to sucker you in auto-renewals” bullshit. It has also a far better reputation as a VPN as I can see.
Hopefully not malicious, but a serious oversight if it is one.
Same tactic is used by Grammerly
…if it were USD to CAD the difference would be more than $11. $93 USD is $128 CAD…
Don’t use NordVPN in the first place, the only reason they exist is because they do mass disinformation. If you really need a vpn, use mullvad.
“Anonymous” Currency
Refund and use Mullvad, much better service than this crap.
