Need help with voice chat not working with vpn enabled

So I have been having an issue where my in-game voice chat does not work, regardless of what I try to do in the settings to fix it. It essentially puts everyone’s voice volume to 0, even after I set them to 100.

Recently I found out that Russian players are not allowed to use voice chat or something, but my VPN happens to be based in Russia. I have tried split-tunneling my VPN so that it excludes Valorant, but it doesn’t seem to work with the Valorant app I found in my Riot Games folder.

Does anyone happen to know what folder I could find the correct application in? Or if this is even actually an issue with my VPN?

Im having the same issue

Its an issue with your VPN. just disable it and when you get into the game turn on your vpn and you’ll have voicechat with a vpn

Same issue here. I don’t see why it should be a problem with VPN. IMO its a problem with one of the valorant components like vanguard or executables in generals

I never fixed the issue, despite trying EVERYTHING, and so I moved on to play other games

Hi, thanks for your input. I was wondering if you know what EXE file is the one being affected? I only ask because I can split-tunnel my VPN so it automatically leaves it alone.

I asked ChatGPT to help. Disclaimer, I haven’t tried it yet, but here is what it said.

Using a VPN with online games can sometimes cause issues because of the way that games handle networking and communication. In the case of Valorant, it’s important to ensure that not only the game’s main executable files are excluded from the VPN via split-tunneling, but also other potential services and processes that could be related to voice chat or other networking features.

Here are a few things you can consider:

  1. Vivox: Riot Games (the developer of Valorant) has used Vivox for in-game voice chat in some of their other games. You might want to check if any processes related to Vivox are running while you play Valorant. If so, exclude those from your VPN.

  2. Additional Riot Services: There might be other Riot services or background processes that handle voice chat or other networking features. Check your Task Manager or equivalent tool for other Riot-related processes that are active while playing.

  3. Ports and Protocols: Sometimes it’s not just about the executables, but also about the specific ports and protocols they use. You might need to make sure that your VPN is not interfering with or blocking the necessary ports. For voice chat and games, UDP is commonly used. You might want to consider exempting specific ports used by Valorant and its services if your VPN software allows such detailed configurations.

  4. Alternative Voice Chat Solutions: If you cannot resolve the issue directly, consider using an external voice chat application like Discord, TeamSpeak, or Mumble. These applications often have better support for VPNs and may not experience the same issues as in-game voice chat systems.

  5. Contact Support: Riot Games has a responsive support team. Consider reaching out to them with your problem, as they might have a more direct solution or be aware of specific issues related to VPNs.

  6. VPN Configuration: Some VPNs allow for advanced configuration, like adjusting the MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) or changing the protocol (e.g., from UDP to TCP or vice versa). Adjusting these settings can sometimes help with certain in-game features.

Remember that using a VPN can affect your connection quality, ping, and other game-related features, even if you have split-tunneling set up. It might be worth testing different VPN servers or even different VPN providers to see if the issue persists.
