I use a popular 3rd party VPN service. I’ve got a 300 Mbps plan from my ISP, when the VPN is on I get 100-140 Mbps. With it off I get 300-350Mbps.
How can I close that gap? Should I try my desktop OS vpn, or maybe the vpn available through my router ?
You might want to look into another VPN.
Make sure you use the WireGuard protocol. The OpenVPN protocol will typically slow down your connection a lot.
half is pretty good, were you thinkng to have the same speed on vpn?..
Maybe you should use Wireguard and check.
I know vpns typically eat into bandwidth but 50%??? I run a Mac so split tunneling is not available to my knowledge. Can you recommend any to try?
Half isn’t pretty good though. I test VPNs and 80% is our cutoff for “fast”

They don’t “eat” bandwidth. They are necessarily less efficient.
Your ISP could be detecting VPN traffic and throttling you on their end but considering the nature of what a vpn is, I would look at that first. Who is your isp and what vpn are you using?
