I found an old thread asking about if McAfee was any good from about 5 years back. The concensus seemed to be that it wasn’t. Does this still hold up?

According to independent labs, McAfee works fine as an AV. Of course, there is a stigma around McAfee given their marketing practices, but in terms of security efficacy it is on par with other average AVs.

These are the most recent lab results from each lab respectively. If you get it for free or already have a subscription, then you aren’t putting yourself at risk for using it. If you’re looking for an AV solution, please check out the vendors on our wiki. I highly encourage you take advantage of the free trials from each to see which you like best. There are also totally free AV offerings available from many of them as well.

It was sold and it got bad, but it seems to have gotten worse after John McAfee’s death, it died along with him…

Mr. McAfee took a leave of absence from the company in 1993, which became permanent in 1994. He did not have anything to do with the company’s software after that time.
