Location leaking around PPTP VPN

Google New is banned in Spain.
I have a PPTP VPN connection setup to my own router/ISPI keep active in California.
Until recently, I would connect via this VPN when I wanted to browse Google News on my Android Phone and Windows 10 computer and it worked as expected. Checking whatsmyip.com would show my California ISP IP range.

Starting today, this method no longer works. Connecting via this VPN; I am taken to the Google News “banned in Spain” splash page. This happens whether on the Android or Windows 10 system. I have cleared cookies, etc, used differant browsers.

How is my true location leaking in a way that Google News knows I am in Spain?

I would advice you to set up literally any other type of VPN than PPTP.

PPTP is broken since the release of CloudCracker by Moxie Marlinspike in 2012! This protocol is ancient and needs to be replaced with OpenVPN or anything else that’s up to date. If your router doesn’t support anything else then your router seems to be pretty outdated as well, I honestly would stop using it. But that’s entirely up to you, of course.

It’s the only protocol that my home router, i am connecting to supports… …and it works, as my public IP shows properly as in California.

You probably need to change your router. It must be absolutely ancient.
