I live in Japan and on numerous occasions, I receive a message saying that access from my location is restricted. A good example are services that host movies. I’m guessing the problem has something to do with copyright restrictions, etc.
My question is whether I can get around this problem with a VPN with the host server set up in the USA? If so, what is a good one to use and about how much should I expect to pay for it. I’m totally stupid when it comes to tech stuff and only got a cell phone 18 months ago.

Yes, that’s the idea. But unfortunately Netflix and some other streaming services will detect a public VPN. A private one should work.
That may be too much for you, but if you have friends or family who is more literated on IT, might as well ask them to set up a VPN server for your to connect. That’s free and mostly undetectable by the streaming providers. But the host will need to share their bandwidth with you, and have some devices always online.
Thank you for this. I definitely have some studying to do. Strange how Netflix reacts to this because I am prepared to pay their subscription rate. I’m not trying to pirate or steal anything, just circumvent the regional restriction.
Thank you for responding. I’m sort of isolated (which is why I am so keen to be able to access US sites) and really don’t understand much of what you wrote. I know, it’s pathetic, but at 71, this old dog is almost hopeless when it comes to learning new tricks.
