Is WARP a proxy?

i’ve read a lot of opinions about cloudflare warp. some say it’s a vpn, some say it isn’t. some say they log data, others say they clearly state they don’t in the policy.

as far as i know traffic’s not encrypted so it’s not a vpn. still, it does change the ip address (at least according the whatsmyip) and also manages to bypass some websites that my ISP blocks.

does anybody use warp? do you know of a way to install it on a router or route traffic through it? (i’m using opnsense)

WARP is a VPN. The traffic is encrypted between your device and their network. Your traffic will appear to come from Cloudflare for a website you are visiting.
Cloudflare is not an anonymous VPN. They do log data and do work with law enforcement. They are also not claiming that WARP can circumvent geo blocks.

The value of Cloudflare WARP is that you have some privacy from the network you’re using, e.g. if you don’t trust your ISP or the Star Bucks wifi.

It’s a WireGuard based VPN.

The confusion on whether WARP is a VPN or not is because some people are misinformed about what a VPN is.

It is a VPN, as it encrypts your traffic and allows you to connect to resources in a private network. Normal WARP users don’t use the later functionality, but WARP is running on the same infra as Zero Trust that provides that, in fact, your WARP client can be enrolled to a Zero Trust network just by entering a config ID.

Their privacy policy is explicit

When you connect to our network, we see your IP address and use it to assign you a Cloudflare IP address corresponding to the country in which you are connecting from. We do not retain a link between the IP address you use to access the Internet via our Application and the websites you visit.

we may also share your information with others in the following circumstances …

When we are required to disclose personal information to respond to subpoenas, court orders, or legal process; or in the case of an emergency to protect any person from the danger of death or serious physical injury; or to establish or exercise our legal rights or defend against legal claims.

Unless you’re breaking the law, you should be fine

install it on a router

Extract the profile with GitHub - ViRb3/wgcf: 🚤 Cross-platform, unofficial CLI for Cloudflare Warp and then deploy it

It is a vpn technically since it uses wireguard internally.

This might help you

It is a wireguard vpn meaning your traffic is encrypted until it hits the server’s end. from there it goes onto the public world wide web. But warp is not meant to bypass geoblocs as you get connected to the closest datacenter or peering point automatically. You get a new public IP from that location too, likely a city nearby.

WARP is very stable, and when visiting Cloudflare-hosted sites, the contents are immediately fetched. If you don’t need to bypass the geo-restrictions, WARP can somehow replace traditional VPNs, but it is not zero-log like Proton VPN and Mullvad. For 1000M Wifi, the speed will drop to about 345M, but is acceptable for daily work.
