I live in NC, traveling out west over the holidays. I have a gig job that requires me to schedule shifts and they fill up pretty fast. I can’t schedule shits states away. Am I asking for the impossible or is there something out there?
You could just set up your own personal VPN in your home where you live and then funnel all your traffic through that.
You’d just have to keep the computer and the internet turned on while you’re away. Oh, and you’d have to learn how to configure a custom home VPN (rather than subscribing to or paying for a commercial one).
Leave your computer/laptop at home.
Install Remote Control software like Anydesk, Chrome Remote or RustDesk to connect to your PC. real easy to set up. You can even connect from your phone or tablet…
You could use tailscale for this and remote into your computer at home.
You can’t schedule shifts, due to geolocation?
You can use a VPN to connect to a server in your home state, but most VPNs typically let you choose a city or country, not a specific town. Some VPN providers might have servers in larger cities near where you live, but being able to pinpoint your exact town is tricky.
For scheduling gig work, you could try connecting to a VPN server in a nearby city that’s still within your state, so it appears as if you’re in the right region. Additionally, make sure the VPN provider offers servers with minimal lag and good speed to avoid issues with scheduling.
Also, consider checking if your gig platform has a mobile app that might let you schedule shifts based on GPS location, as this could help bypass the regional restrictions.
oh damn, I don’t think Im that tech savvy
Correct! I may be able to gps spoof but I haven’t found a reliable app
Look up tailscale, super easy, it’s just an app on your computer (that you’ll have to leave running) and an app on your phone.
If you have an Asus router it’s super easy to use open VPN and the client setting on the router. I use it to be at home if I need to maintain my family computers.
Depends on your device, OS and availability of the app in your store.
Is this called Port forwarding? I am interested in something like this for streaming when away from home but allows others to keep using the streaming service
No port forwarding is for transiting the firewall with services. Have a look at https://www.asus.com/us/support/faq/1011232/
