Is there such thing as free VPN?

Any info appreciated!

Keep in mind, that with a free VPN, you’re the product.

Yes, There is a VPN which is great and free. ProtonVPN

Depends what you want a vpn for.
With everything in life, a good service is never provided for free.
I use nord and it’s fast and reliable.
I use it mainly because I hate that in the UK there are a ton of agencies that can monitor what you view online.
A vpn does not guarantee your privacy, but it helps.

I run my own VPN server at home to allow me to connect and tunnel my device back home.

The first question you should ask is really if you need a VPN. Something like 90% of the claims you see in various ads for VPNs are just bullshit.

The only legitimate reasons I can think of for a private individual to need a VPN is to bypass geo-restrictions, like watching something on Netflix that isn’t available in your country or visiting a website that block visitors from your country. Or if you happen to live in a country where free speech is severely limited and you want to hide your online activities from your internet provider and government. However with a VPN the VPN provider can see your online activity, so you now have to trust the provider instead.

I am not aware of any free VPN services. However VPN is just a term for a technology of which there are several, like OpenVPN and many of these are free to use. I assume what you’re looking for is a VPN provider and those are not free as it cost money to run a service like that.

I might catch smoke for this but I don’t really care much about using VPN’s… never really had any problem without them. If you’re going somewhere on the web you really don’t want to leave any breadcrumbs, just use the Tor browser/network…

The Opera browser has a fakish-VPN, in that I can use it to access geo-locked websites, so it’s useful for that.

I also have the free 10 GB / month version of WindScribe. It’s 2 GB by default but they give you 10 GB if you subscribe to their mailing list, so I use my junk email account to get it. Yeah, 10 GB isn’t much but I don’t use it to watch videos or stream, so it’s plenty for my needs.

I mean sort of. For instance, if you get a proton email account they give you one VPN that you can use but only one device at a time.

So it’s probably worth investing like 30 bucks a year for like nordvpn or something. I’ve seen it as low as 20 just so you can get access to more devices at one time. But if you absolutely need a VPN and you’re only going to use one device at a time, you could do that. Just be careful if you abuse the system you could lose your account. But ultimately if you can save 20 to 30 bucks look for places like select deals and woot. And you’ll see 12 months for 30 bucks or 20 bucks even sometimes at various reputable VPNs.

Like if you go to slick deals right now they have a deal at woot for a year for 30 bucks and a month ago or so it was 20. There was also a deal where you could get a year of office and Nord VPN for like 35 or 40 bucks.

If you go directly through the companies, they’ll make you commit to 2 years to get a decent rate.

Although some of them just charge a flat five bucks per month rate like mullvad e or Malwarebytes or something

Proton or Windscribe, with the latter having a 10gb monthly cap.

No, never. Maintaining data center, servers, staff needs money. Do not be homeless bums, pay for produxt, be human beings.

Why would you even want a VPN in the first place? All you’re doing is provide all your data to a 3rd party which isn’t regulated by the same rules as your IP. Some even reserve the right to sell of your data, ya know?

All those stories about extra security? All bogus, hogwash. A VPN won’t stop you from clicking on a “Vote for me!!!” link and providing your Steam details, only to find out that your account has been cleared out. HECK, some VPN providers will even block you from entering certain political websites just because it doesn’t match their ideals.

Please let this sink in: an ISP is regulated by law and can’t “just” filter your stuff unasked, a VPN provider can. They’re not an ISP afterall. Do you really want to trust a random 3rd party with all your data? TO do with as they please?

If anything VPN’s are massively overhyped. I’d even call it a scam to be honest.

Yeah I mean that’s basically true but there are things you can use that are reasonable. Like proton is reputable and they offer anybody that wants a free email account with them one account and they allow you to use a VPN but only on one device concurrently.

That’s a pretty huge limitation, but if you just needed a VPN to do something for a couple hours or whatever, as long as you’re only using on device, it’s not a terrible solution.

I wouldn’t advise it as a long-term solution, but if someone’s really strapped for cash and needs a VPN, I don’t think it’s a bad idea.

Frankly, it’s a good excuse to try proton or any alternative to Gmail or Yahoo or whatever.

Although I prefer tuta.

unregulated make u a product. not free. u think vpns that ask u 1$ doesnt make u a product. there are even markets that ask u money just cause people woud think the same and there are markets that ask u alot of money just cause u r clueless. go use rise up vpn.

my birth was freeXD. i think there should be some things that should be free like human dignity or education. using a vpn is like using an incognito mode on yt. it just another thing for market selling to take ur info.

i live in a 3rd world country ruled by dictatorship and they block everything and i mean like everything and cant even use an online payment since they dont want us to use dollars but their own currency and its banned so a vpn that are paid are pointless since people who needed vpn cant use it yet people who doesnt can. i even using this with my vpn on google extension. and i need a vpn that can use other services. vpns are so important for people like us.

What about just wanting to be able to overturn geolocalisation restrictions

True that is a very valid reason for using a VPN. It’s sad that there’s still dictators in this world.

That is one of two legitimate reasons for a private individual to have the need for a VPN. The other being if you live in a country with severely limited free speech.
