Is Avast really that bad?

I was scrolling through comments on a recent post and everyone was absolutely HATING on Avast. Personally it’s saved me from a few malicious websites when I’ve gone looking for things I need, and there’s 0 pop ups, ever. Definitely way better than Advanced Systemcare (fuck you iObit), and while Windows Defender works alright, I just forget it exists most times. Is Avast as “bloaty” as everyone says??

while Windows Defender works alright, I just forget it exists most times

That’s what you want in an AV. No annoying popups, no begging you to buy the premium version, no unnecessary bloat. As long as you have common sense you don’t need another AV. If you need to do a scan you can download malwarebytes free.

What windows? Windows 7? Ya anything helps. Windows 10/11, the built in is better

The closest things I’ve ever had to a virus on my pc is virus protections, they’re waaay to invasive.

I used to use Avast. Then I got hit with a virus. I shouldn’t have since I was running Avast. But I got infected.

I ran the scan and it showed I had it but then came the matter of how to eliminate it.

Avast solution? Go to this website, download this tool, run this tool, when it finds the virus tell it to destroy the virus.

WTF??? A virus software that cannot protect or remove viruses?

It used to be one of the better ones on the market. Nowadays it doesn’t really catch things it needs to.

There are just better options. Something like bitdefender… I mean Norton somehow stays a decent name

I liked Avast back in the day, but not in the last five years or so. From my experience, Avast was great once, then it eventually became something like Norton where it takes over your entire system in a bad way. Fine for business PCs that do nothing but not for a gaming rig.

These days Windows Defender seems to be enough unless you do something stupid. I also have Malwarebytes (not running in the background) just to scan anything I download or transfer.

It’s not bad, it’s actually good, but you need to know how to set it up.

  1. When you are installing it, select the most basic version. This way you don’t have all the bloat ware.
  2. Once installed, turn on silent mode, this will turn off all of the annoying popups and nags. If it detects a threat a little blue mark will show up next to the icon.
  3. Turn off sound notifications.

With these 3 things you’ll have better protection than Windows Defender without all the annoying nagging

Also, you can look up how well Antivirus products are doing on some sites that research this. Here are the latest real world tests from AV Comparatives. https://www.av-comparatives.org/tests/real-world-protection-test-july-october-2023/

As you can see from the summary chart, Avast, and a few others are the ones that were most effective. But of those, Avast has the least false positives.

I hope this helps.

DISCLAIMER: I do not work for nor am in any way associated with Avast. I just hate false positives and I started digging into AV comparative tests to find the best AV for me. I used to use Avira because of the simpler UI and implementation, but switched.

YES, and they bill suspiciously without consent. STAY FAR AWAY

constant pop ups to upgrade…All kinds of crap gets through. The free malwarebytes cleans all the crap avast misses…Avast a huge waste of money…The pop ups are worse than any virus Ive ever had.

Avast is really bad… glitchy like hell and the customer service is awful. STAY AWAY! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!

From my personal experience… stay away from Avast!

Avast is beyond bad… it is terrible!

Update: just installed, then uninstalled Avast, Pop ups were not an issue, windows does that, what was an issue was intentionally slowing my processing/internet. Avast is a scam. Always was, still is.

Avast is going downhill, used to be one of the best antivirus. Now has become a bloatware trying to push you to buy their stuff and scare you. Many times also nowadays detects threats that do not exist, false threats

Windows defender>basically any anti-virus out there

I’m using avast (free version) for years, never had problems. I’m sure there are better options tho

Avast did fear mongering on me “you have 71636 broken registry keys!!”

I use virustotal.com

I see a few Avast agents trolling for avast here… minimum wage??

Avast double charge your credit card- be ware!!!
