I’ve recently seen tailscale which is a good one apparently but I’m a little skeptical on what they do if I would route through them. I have a file server and a game server that I want to route through but I’m nit so sure how safe I will be l. I’ve also seen netgear vpn and thought that might be a great idea because I can see traffic and block if I need to. I’m essentially looking for a great alternative to portforwading that keeps me safe and dosnt mine data.
I'm looking into vpn tunnels and how safe and reliable are they. I've seen a few but I'm not so sure
VPN adds latency and reduces capacity so it’s far from ideal for any kind of gaming. Moving files from A2B will be okay at best, anything in real time just don’t even bother.
Any manufacturer provided VPN is usually just a cash grab and a pretty crap product since the majory of net traffic is encrypted anyway.
What are you trying to achieve or avoid ?
Should I also add this post on r/privacy
I would just use something like Zerotier - it does all the tunneling setup for you, works on pretty much anything and will give you file transfers inside the virtual LAN using whatever tool you like.
I personally use windows shares and winSCP for communicating with Linux storage, but there’s a ton of ways to do it.
And unlike Tailscale you can self-host everything, including roots (they call them moons if you don’t want to use Zerotier’s infrastructure at all, or if you want some faster/more reliable roots closer to your location or inside your network).
Firewalla firewalls support wireguard and openvpn and there’s no middleman
Great to know. But if it’s encrypted then is its fine??. I’m trying to avoid any and all eyes such as Google Facebook etc from looking at my files. For my gaming server I don’t care but I do care who has access to my network especially bots that port scan and all. Also whats a great way to transfer files I’m using ftp but I’m thinking of sftp
Edit: I also want to be able to monitor users to prevent bad actors
Is this a tried and true thing for the last part
Okay I see what you mean. Tbh the eyes of Meta, Goog, Lord Jeff etc are pretty much inescapable,
it’s designed that way and whatever we do we can’t stop leaving our digital fingerprints everywhere.
FYI 90% what they tell you on VPN ads is BS.
It’s best to focus on the things you can control.
Tailscale between your private server and your home client. It’s not time sensitive so you’ll be ok. If you really want to lock it down then encrypt the data before transferring it via TS.
Don’t worry about port scans, again it’s pretty unavoidable and happens to us all. Your firewall should be taking care of it but if you want to test it try GRC | ShieldsUP! — Internet Vulnerability Profiling .
Yes, they don’t want to pay for your bandwidth. If your router allows it, Tailscale will perform NAT traversal to establish a direct connection between your devices.
But if I use cubes and tor I can escape them right??
I hate Jeff especially with a burning soul. I try not to use Google if I can and what happens if I delete my foot print and what’s a efficient way of encrypting my data. Thx for the website what happens if I change the port for eg ssh will.i avoid the scan? Also can I use tor as a vpn some how
That’s amazing and how much data can they see or what gets stored?
Not really. You still have fingerprints but you leave less of them in slightly different places, like I say it’s unavoidable.
You could download and delete your entire data profile from the likes of the Zucc etc but in the end it’s pointless, fingerprints again and do they actually delete it .
That depends on what data it is and how much of it you need to scramble. Bear in mind it needs to be decrypted once you download it.
Just run the scan and see what happens. Changing ports won’t make much difference the scan just follows the ports, that just follow the router requesting them.
Use tor instead of a VPN in some cases. Depends what your using it for.
Dose this ever get shared
