I was thinking to get proton unlimited and replace Mulvad, but after checking I see that Proton VPN is unusable. Does it get any better with the paid version? can anybody share results pls?

Free is free for a reason.

You’re comparing a free service with a paid one, that’s not a fair comparison.

I’m an unlimited user, I just ran a speed test for you.

Yes paid servers are faster.

I’ve been a paying customer of ProtonVPN for several years now with great success.

I switched from Mulvad to Proton about 5 years ago, mainly for cost reasons, I get bundled mail and vpn for lower cost than Mulvad.

Ignoring port forwarding and cost Mulvad is an excellent VPN.

Proton VPN has been good, I generally get arround 80% of the throughput of my bare connection, there is also a slight rise in ping, 20ms or so, but nothing horrible. My vpn use case is not sensitive to latency.

Proton has good options for headless Linux both wireguard and openvpn.

Last I checked Mulvad was graphical app only.

Running Proton with Wireguard I get good download volume.I get exactly what I pay for, from Proton and my ISP.

As everyone else here said free servers are slower than the premium servers cause of their load percentage usually free servers in the USA are 70-90% loaded most of the time while the premium servers are 10-30% loaded depending on the location so it’s a huge difference to compare internet speeds !!!

I used both Mullvad and ProtonVPN, and both have very good speeds. Currently running ProtonVPN on my 5G Home Broadband connection, so speeds vary throughout the day, but speeds are very close to my normal connection. Speeds should definitely be better with the paid version.

I have no issues with the paid version. Plus side is it portforwards for me so I don’t have to dick around with my router

I switched from Mullvad for VPN Plus yesterday and was able to connect. Now I am unable to connect at all. This VPN service is frustrating and too much of a hassle. I regret paying for VPN Plus. Will go back to mullvad if the issue still persists.

Its still hot garbage compared to mullvad.
I do respect the drive and mail though

I had it and it worked well depending on server might be a bit faster then mulvad.

Thank you so much. This is what I needed to see

At least they offer 30 days to refund you. I hope you can fix it.

The drive? That is actually garbage. VPN is solid (not great, not the best, but solid).

It works well sometimes and doesn’t sometimes. When I was on the free tier sometimes it would consistently connect me to Japan servers only (I’m in the US), and sometimes not, basically it’s very inconsistent and not guaranteed to work every time as you expect. The difference is that if free service is not working well usually nobody will fix anything for you because you aren’t a paying customer, so you just have to wait until it works again.

The connection problem I kept having was actually from Mullvad even when that app isnt even running at startup. I will keep the ProtonVPN subscription.

I hope so too. My post about this got heavily downvoted so my only chance is either Proton support or resetting my computer.
