Developers have to pay a large sum of money to Microsoft in order to get their applications signed (approved by Microsoft). Darktable probably does not have that money, since it is free software. As long as you download software that you know from the official website of the developer, you can ignore this safely.

I’ve had this for every install for as long as I can remember. It’s no big deal, but I often wondered how many people might decide not to install and use darktable because of it.

There are multiple issues with darktable and Windows Defender (antivirus in general). You can look them up on GitHub, a few:

A couple of questions:

  • Which Windows version are you on?
  • What is “Smart Screen”, btw?

The problem is not with Darktable, but with the Windows. With each and every update it became worst and worst. It is al about monopoly and money.

Windows always shows as suspicious each *.exe

And yes, when I click on “more info”, I can force the install.

But why is this happening? I never had this screen before in my previous installs.

since the arrival of Proton I ditched Windows for good. that os is crap.

Oh really? Didn’t know. I have a couple of free software installed (one that comes to mind is 7zip for example) and they don’t produce this kind of warning. And to be honest, if it wasn’t Darktable, it would frigthen me quite a bit. That’s a professional machine, I wouldn’t want to install something Microsoft Defender is warming me against.

You may be talking about a code signing certificate (~$200/yr). Not sure if darktable raises that money or what. But this seems to be something different.

Oh really? That’s the first time for me. And exactly, that’s what I thought, a lot of people seeing this will simply not install it.

Which Windows version are you on?

Windows 10 Pro.

What is “Smart Screen”, btw?

I have no idea :stuck_out_tongue:

(and just for the record, I have put this in another comment but it works just fine after you click on “more info” and proceed anyway, it’s only very strange that a software like Darktable got flagged like this)

I thought Proton was a VPN?

This is a recent change from Microsoft, as far as I know. This has been a problem for a while. In my opinion, it is designed to make looots of money for Microsoft, since the average user will be scared to install anything that Windows defender warns you about. MacOS has something similar for a couple of years now.

Are you sure it’s something different than the code signing certificate? When I google for articles on how to sign your Apps in Windows, they tell you that you can get rid off the “Windows protected your PC” message that way. For example: https://blog.inkdrop.app/code-signing-certificate-for-indie-developers-564f86492957 . I have to correct my statement regarding this being a new issue. I have recently seen indie devs on X complain about a change that flagged their game as dangerous, but the problem seems to be old. https://itch.io/t/149696/getting-your-game-past-windows-smart-defender

If you check the first link it has a “solution” for pro, cause apparently pro has beefier security.

Oh I don’t know – I assume it is signed and Windows just flagged it for some other reason.
