I getting AT&T fiber internet, best way to install VPN on a router?

I am having fiber internet installed. I want to have the VPN at the router level. What is the best way to do it? Buy a router to connect to the AT&T equipment?

Usually ISP’s will provide an all in one router/modem. The router functionality on these units is usually very limiting and likely won’t have built in VPN capabilities. You can however disable the router side of these units and use your own external router. Usually the units will have something called bridge mode which will completely disable all router functionality. You can then connect your actual router into the box your ISP provided you and use that.

Netgate just added a work around in pfSense+. See the documentation here: WAN Connectivity with 802.1X Authentication Bridging and VLAN 0 PCP Tagging | pfSense Documentation

I am using gl-inet FLINT: https://www.gl-inet.com/products/gl-ax1800/

You can connect this to the modem/router that comes with your ISP. This router supports both OPENVPN and WIREGUARD.

Just spoke with AT&T tech support yesterday, the modem/router that AT&T provides actively blocks VPN supporting routers so one is forced to use the AT&T VPN product. I’m currently testing with a the TailScale VPN service to see if that works, or AT&T is somehow blocking that…

Hello do you have AT&T router? Or does your isp router use CGNAT? If yes how do you go about this setup and configuring port forwarding? Thanks

How does the AT&T VPN product work?

Were you able to get tailscale working with the AT&T equipment?

no. I’ve tried so many things with tailscale, and none of them work. I’m sour on tailscale these days. I’ve basically given up on them, because the time I’ve invested, which equals over a month of full time effort in just tailscale, came to nothing. If I see a promising tutorial that I’ve not tried, I tend to ignore it simply because I did that for months and none of them work. Now, they just look like a sad propaganda joke to me. I realize this is a bad place, intellectually, but fuck them. Their marketing claims ease, and I’ve hod nothing but pain. Fuck tailscale.
