Hello, I use tailscale which is awesome, to my understanding it is an overlay network / mesh VPN and NOT concerned with anonymizing traffic.
What can I add on to tailscale to make my traffic anonymous / private as well? Should I use a private VPN service on top of it??
First accept nothing you do on the internet will ever truly be anonymous or private. However you can always take steps to move that direction by using services that somewhat respect your privacy.
Others may have specific solutions you can add to your network which will help.
There are browsers with built-in VPN functionality for that. Ex. Opera offers the optional use of their VPNs when opening a Private Tab.
you can have exit nodes running on VPN which you then select on your Tailnet device and woo-lah. for fun, have many, with each one having a different provider. and switch between them often.
You could configure your router to use a strong VPN like ProtonVPN, or to use Tor, and then have a machine behind it set as your exit node on all your other devices.
I think I like this idea the most. When I’m home it’s no problem to use this exit node, I can probably even use a raspberry pi
