How safe is torrenting in Germany with VPN?

Moved here a couple of months ago and just got NordVPN from a friend but im scared to torrent.
Is it safe to do it with vpn and what are the chances of getting caught torrenting with a VPN because i dont really want a 1.5k fine

The chances are close to zero if you don’t mess up.

Along with other advice here I’d say use qBittorrent and bind the connection to your VPN adapter.

Look it up, plenty of guides.

Also set your VPN location to another close by country, Netherlands for example.

It is safe, as mentioned, if your IP address is not leaking.

Your internet traffic is encrypted and routed to a VPN server, and all P2P connections are made from there, that’s why VPN service providers have specific servers for torrenting/P2P.

A few points to make sure you stay completely safe:

  • Use a VPN with no-log policy: many top VPN providers has it.
  • Use a VPN that has Internet Kill Switch: just in case a connection to VPN server drops you won’t leak your IP
  • Double check IP leaks when connected to a VPN server on ipleak websites. As an extra precaution check for webrtc leak as well, but that’s not so important when torrenting
  • Connecting to a different country or using double or tripple VPN wont change anything since your internet traffic is encrypted anyways, it would only bring down your download speed

So overall, just use trusworthy VPN provider and you’re good!

Use IPleak and DNSleaktest to ensure the VPN isn’t leaking your IP address and/or DNS requests. If all goes well, theoretically, you should be fine.

Tips:

  • Use qBittorrent and bind it to your VPN interface.
  • Enable all kill switches on your VPN client(s)
  • Signup with one VPN using your real IP address and then run that VPN on your router, telling it to only route traffic through the VPN
  • Signup with second VPN, while connected to first VPN. Pay for this second VPN with Monero or other anonymous means. Run second VPN on your PC.

You could also accomplish the above by running the first VPN on your PC. Then run the second VPN in a virtual machine. Virtual machine would have a NAT interface to the host. Run qBittorrent in the VM.

Note: Never run the second VPN without going through the first VPN. Otherwise your anonymity with the second VPN is lost by the fact of the second VPN seeing your real IP address.

Nord doesn’t allow port forwarding, invest in a decent VPN for P2P

I think its the main issue in here, that, is your vpn is leaking your IP or not.

Like I use Purevpn’s German Dedicated IP to browse their shows and channels and it had never leaked my IP, not even a single time.

So its the major concern that is your IP is leaked. so it is safe torrenting when it is blocked in your region. I dont know about Nord but Purevpn is reliable from my perspective.

Could you tell me some of the safety rules? I know about the kill switch and to bind the torrent to the vpn but is that enough?
