How do you set up a VPN with ur Xfinity Gateway

So I have the Xfinity wireless router n modem gateway, and I want to set up a VPN through it. Any advice or help?

I assume you have VPN software on your PC. The only thing that I noticed with my Comcast is that I needed to set the security to low as it would not connect with moderate to medium security level settings.

Gonna need more details. You want it setup on your router? Or on your PC?

Flashrouters.com and maybe expressvpn to go with it might be the easiest from an end user perspective.

Router, but if I have to use Ethernet through the PC, I want all traffic to run through the VPN

Well first you would need to buy a router that supports that.

There’s no ability to setup VPNs on the Xfinity gateways.

Like the other guy said, you need a specialized router for that.

What sort of VPN are we talking about here.

Are you trying to connect your entire network to a remote network?

Are you trying encrypt all of your internet traffic and perhaps obscure your location?

Are you trying to connect just your computer to a remote network?

Are you just trying to encrypt your traffic from your own computer and perhaps obscure it’s location?

Where talking setting up my internet ip / traffic to route through the VPN through the router.

Let’s call this 4 types.

Type 1: I want to connect my computer and my printer to the office network so it is as though they are on the same network.

Type 2: I want to connect just my computer to the office so it is as though I was on my office network.

Type 3: I want to connect my computer to a service that makes it hard for Comcast to see what I am doing and maybe helps me look like I am somewhere else.

Type 4: I want to hide everything I am doing on every device on the network from Comcast and perhaps disguise my location.

Each of these setups are VPNs but they all have different requirements. It is impossible to help without understanding what you are asking for help with.

I mean the more accurate is the 3rd one but it’s not to hide from Comcast it’s more that I don’t want me IP address / location to be blasted for everyone to see.

  1. I want to be able to access resources ( server printers) that are at my house when I am not home

I beginning to suspect that you have not fully considered what you are asking for. An IP address is not like a social security number. Having your IP address known by the other side of the connection is how their packets ready you. Encrypting all network traffic hiding your personal data will require a router with that functionality built in or advanced configuration and a subscription to a VPN service.

Best of luck.

I’m fully expecting to pay for both a router and a VPN connecting subscription which is mostly why I need help.

If the answer is #3 I really suggest you NOT use a free VPN. If you want to know why, understand this: it costs money to set up servers and configure and support a VPN. As Harvey MacKay once said “ Beware of the naked man who offers you his shirt” Think of why they would give this away for free and would you work for free?

Yeah imma use a subscription based one.
