How do I stop Brave VPN Wireguard from starting automatically?

I have this “Brave Wireguard VPN Service” that appeared in my startup programs. I love Brave but I never used their VPN nor intend to. How can I disable it?

I already unticked “Show VPN button” and “Use Wireguard protocol” in Brave settings but it didn’t do anything.

Just stop it from starting. You are literally on the startup section, so disable it. Did the same, works.

The VPN service by default is only registered with the OS but not enabled. A small percentage of users were affected by a bug that enabled it though, which seems to be the case for you.

But if you just wait a bit there is a release coming to the stable channel very soon that will remove the service entirely until a user activates the VPN.

Disable it and remove from auto start.

Do not try to remove the underlying program, Brave will reinstall it.

This service reactivates itself and triggers OCD to whoever is afflicted by the “what I don’t need should not run” syndrome.

I won’t go into the “debloat vs let it be” debate, but I think Brave dev are aware of the reason of their sucess; propose bloat but never insist if unticked.

Run as admin, tick off what you don’t want to start.

Not met a case where ticking off wasn’t respected. You can remove it, but possibility of it getting re-added with update.

Uninstall Brave and then reinstall without accepting the UAC promt when it pops up.
This way Brave gets installed in app data instead of program files without the VPN part, since this needs maximum rights.

lol brave devs moved from bloating the browser to bloating operating system.

By uninstalling the browser

You have to do it after each Brave update or no?

The fix for this issue is almost guaranteed to drop in the next release. Uninstalling and reinstalling is a very heavy-handed alternative compared to just waiting a few days.

Not that I know of. Windows saves this for the application itself, so it should not happen.

Hasn’t been enabled for me yet.

The difference is that Brave can’t install it’s VPN by this methode, because it has no right to.
While the fix still can be fucked up again in the future.
Uninstall keeps the profile data if you don’t tick the cleanup feature, so there is no real loss.
