Do i use VPN all the time?

I am usually just on the internet like YouTube, Facebook, Twitter etc… if not on the internet then I just play games or watch movies.
Do I need to use VPN also then, or only if I am like… browsing the net, watching adult websites or searching for something etc …
Thx

It’s an habit you can get, a way of not letting anyone know where you’ve been. So yes, most of us here just turn it on and forget about it. Not even forget, actively monitor that we’re on our preferred VPN. IMHO.

The only reason to turn off VPN is multiplayer games to reduce ping.

I have it active 24/7 on mobile and computer. Sure it‘s not super necessary when I‘m just watching YouTube or Netflix but it‘s a peace of mind thing to know my traffic is always encrypted.

Regarding blocks from sites like steam just make sure you are connected to your home country. You are normally only getting blocked if you try a VPN to change the location to somewhere cheaper.
For instance if you live in Switzerland and game costs 50$ on Steam and you use the VPN to connect to Argentina where the same game is 2$ you are getting blocked. If you live in Switzerland and connect to Switzerland they are fine with it in my experience (never had an issue at least).

without the 24/7 threat reducing, vpn does not demand any special moves to be enabled; click and forget;

I never had any issues using a VPN with steam.
Unless you’re benefiting from something you don’t have in your country. Region lock / prices… In which case, steam may ban you.
My VPN is active 24/7, but I’m using the same country in which I’m living on, so I don’t have to think about that.

If I need to be in another country when browsing, I use the browser extension. Both enabled works fine.

My only issue is battle.net launcher. It will log you out when your IP change.
Also, you may encounter websites that block you.
Some websites may ask you repetitively and sometime intensively to solve captcha :frowning:
For the Google Captcha I’m using “Buster: Captcha”. It needs some configuration, but works like a charm.

Depends really what you want.

If you want maximum privacy and those what you mentioned (and others) could not track you then… Yes you do need to use it all the time.
(just remember VPN do not remove all tracking and security issues/conserns)

If you don’t mind them to track you time to time on certain activity… Then you don’t need.
(remember however that once it goes off some apps etc may ‘call home’)

Entirely depends on your threat model. In terms of security to the connection, a VPN doesn’t add anything if you already have DNS over HTTPS enforced in your browser + HTTPS only browsing.

If you’re logged into those sites, they already have that way to track you, so hiding your IP with a VPN doesn’t prevent tracking in that regard.

For watching movies, sure, it gets you around geoblocks and legal restrictions.

24 x 7 to different IP’s on laptops, phones and TVs.
Use split tunneling feature to support disciplined browser compartmentalization.
Use Netshield and Wireguard but rarely enable Netshield. EDIT: Rarely enable Secure Core

Using a VPN on mobile all the time drains the battery faster.

I used to switch it on and off, some things seemed very slow with it on. Then I discovered how to put wireguard/ProtonVPN into my Archlinux at boot, and never turn it off. I just slows the ping time a little, but not enough to be trouble.

You need a VPN for everything you do online. Internet providers are allowed to monitor what you do and sell that information to advertisers and they’ll give it to the police with or without a warrant.

If my phone or PC is on, then ProtonVPN is connected.

I have the VPN on by default, but because I also have NetShield enabled to block ads and trackers, not just malware, some sites refuse to work – not because of the VPN, I believe, but because of ad blocking. I turn it off, use only that site, and then turn the VPN back on. Or I just go somewhere else, if I don’t have to use that particular site.

I personally just use it for my PC and my phone, and only when using Wi-Fi I don’t trust.

Thank you.
Do you think i will have a problem with STEAM? I know Steam doesn’t like VPN because you change region.

I have VPN on 24/7 and set it up to exclude my game. That way I don’t forget to turn it back on later.

Not an expert here, but for steam I think you have to be connected to a specific country server AND change your store region to that country on steam. I think there’s also a limit on how often you can do this.

I use my actual country steam store while being connected to other countries and the prices don’t change

to know my traffic is always encrypted.

Your traffic on those sites is always encrypted. For added certainty, the best thing to do is enable DNS over HTTPS + HTTPS only browsing which will provide the same security in that regards and you’ll notice absolutely no problems.

Im using Steam and games 24/7 with Proton. No issues.
