Digging out some old threads: "Welcome to UCI Freshman class and Transfers!"

A lot of our posts are asking the same things over and over, I don’t mind answering the ones I can, but since I can help you find the answer w/o posting, I am reposting these, definitely give the last one a try, I hope this helps you (some links might be outdated, no time to check them all, sorry):

1 Office and Win 10

2 VPN

Step 2: Using VPN

This one requires a little more advanced computer skills, but hopefully we can make it work.

VPN is a direct connection to the network at UCI from outside campus. The advantages of this are being able to connect to the library to do research, access some resources only available if you are on campus, and an extra layer of security if you are connecting from a public WiFi hotspot such as Starbucks, etc.

Start at:

https://www.oit.uci.edu/help/vpn/

Select your operating system and follow the instructions specific to your device. Again, give it a try and post questions if you find any problems.

3 Kanopy

Step 3: Kanopy

Kanopy is a free service offering unlimited access to movies, documentaries and video lessons. If you are on campus, just go to:

https://www.kanopy.com/

and setup your account using UCI’s email address. If you are connecting from other place, you can activate the VPN mentioned in step 2 and access your Kanopy account without any problems.

4 Library Research, NYT, WSJ. Paywalls. Science, Langson,

Step 4 UC Libraries

You have a ton of materials to browse at the UC Library System. Start at:

https://www.lib.uci.edu

Langson for Humanities, Science, Grunigen for Medicine, MRC (Multimedia Resource Center), SCA (Special Collections & Archives), and Gateway Study Center are all at our campus, also access to interlibrary loans if the materials you are looking for are at a different UC.

Self-Checkout Windows laptops (available for two hour loan )

Chromebooks (available for 2 day loan)

Computers, Ebooks through OverDrive, magazines, scanning, printing in black&white and color, places to take naps, study rooms, photocopiers, cell phone chargers, etc.

If connecting from home, you will need to use the VPN and login to the library with your UCI student account to have access to all the information on holdings, call numbers, etc.

5 UCI OpenUniversity courses

Step 6: iClicker 2

Well, looks like supply is much smaller than demand for iClickers and the Facebook group UCI Free and for sale is slow to respond to anteaters trying to join, so I will give you some options:

For starters, the model you are looking for is iClicker2 and if you buy it at the Hill it will set you back $40 dollars for rental or $60 if you want to buy it. Other options are Amazon at $50 and Walmart.com at $54. A cheaper option is the iClicker Reef which is an app for your phone or tablet with a subscription model for 6 months for $15 dollars. This one has a free trial period of 2 weeks:

Welcome to Incoming Freshmen and Transfers to UCI! Step 7: Searching /r/UCI

One of the most useful things to learn about /r/UCI is to look for prior posts that ask the same information you are looking for. If using a computer to open Reddit, you will have a search bar at the top of the screen that says “search /r/UCI” just click there and type a general term for your search such as: parking

If you are using your phone and a web browser you have on the upper right corner the icon of a magnifying glass to access the search bar.

Or if you install the Reddit app, on the top of the page you will see the icon of a magnifying glass followed by r/UCI.

Sometimes the search function is not as good as google so you can use this instead:
