I’m moving into uni halls soon and I wanted to know if a VPN can hide the adress of the site you re using. I’m not doing anything weird, I’m just a film student and sometimes films can be hard to find or very expensive, and of course piracy won’t be very welcome. I’m scared that they’ll notice the name of the site I’m using, which very much states what it does (not torrenting just streaming).
Yes. That’s a core feature of VPNs. Just make sure you turn on kill switch to avoid leaks.
Yes. Not that they would be able too see urls much most of the time because of HTTPS. The sites you are visiting would also be discoverable potentially because of DNS. If you use a VPN you will not be using the university DNS so it solves that problem too. Also, don’t use a university owned Google or Microsoft account to save your browser profile. Remember, VPNs are great at what they do, but they aren’t magic. They are only part of protecting your privacy.
Google and the VPN provider will be aware, but not your uni.
Okay thank you! Yeah I won’t use any uni account
even with HTTPS the domain is sent unecrypted (see the Host header of HTTP)
Not with TLS 1.3 properly configured, but as a general rule, you are right
what vpn do u use that doesn’t get blocked by ur school?
