Can I bypass my VPN with my Roku?

Is there any way to bypass my VPN installed on my router with my Roku? When I have the VPN running I (obviously) can’t watch Netflix. I’ve been able to get the browser on my laptop to bypass it by adding

allow-pull-fqdn

route www.netflix.com 255.255.255.255 net_gateway

to the end of my config file but it won’t work with my Roku.

Any good openvpn setup will allow you to do policy routing. Just route the roku via the WAN interface, not the openvpn interface.

depending on the router you have, you may have an option in your VPN client to “redirect traffic” and set a policy manually. That will let you choose what device you want to go through VPN and which one you want to go through the front door.

Does anyone know how to do this using a TP Link router? I have 4 Rokus and want to get a VPN service.

I really am not qualified to elaborate on this, and it might not even be correct, but I think you need to look into giving your roku a static (or permanently the same) IP address and then doing some setting up in your router’s settings. Sorry I can’t give
You concrete info

I know it’s just a Roku, but I don’t think it’s a good idea to put anything in the DMZ permanently.

I’m using an Asus TM-AC1900. And thanks I’ll try that out!

These are my options under the WAN tab on my router. I have an Asus TM-AC1900. Any clue which one of the options it might be under? I checked them and didn’t see anything that looked like what you were talking about

OK, since you have an asus router, install Merlin Asus firmware. He’s written policy routing into the firmware. You access policy routing as an option within the openvpn client setup page.

They asked to bypass VPN, but entire gateway.

Ok thanks! I had debated whether or not it was worth it to flash Merlin but I think I’m going to go ahead and do it. I really appreciate the help! I’ve been looking for a solution to this for several weeks but I hadn’t been able to find anything.
