Bitter - I had problems with ProtonVPN for years, tried F-Secure once and it solved them all

I’m a long-time Proton Plus user and always had issues connecting my Google TV with the UK or Sweden to stream BBC iPlayer or svt using ProtonVPN. Endless buffering, stuttering, or complete failure to connect. Today I just browsed around for alternatives, trying out F-Secure’s VPN to find out that it works flawlessly. I’m quite surprised and disappointed as I thought I was paying more for a premium, secure VPN until now.

I tried different devices and recently even moved house and provider, upgraded bandwidth, changed all possible settings on VPN, apps, TV, router… it just seems Proton never was able to deliver a fast connection to these services.

Am I the only one to experience this?

I’ve been streaming iPlayer and STV (Scotland) from my (far away) country without problems, both on the desktop Windows 11 and on Android. Using ProtonVPN UK server (either Secure Core or direct). But I have been using it for about a week.

Have you tried on mobile phone and desktop? That’s weird anyway.

I’ve also found ProtonVPN to be less than expected.
You always expect more when you pay more, but ProtonVPN is disappointing.

They have Wireguard but it’s not faster than Nord or Mullvad, for example.
They have streaming support but it’s never consistent like Strong, WeVPN, or Surfshark.

I don’t think you get your money’s worth with Proton - it’s as expensive as Express, but does NOT deliver.

Just tried F-Secure’s VPN. The android app looks very basic (only one UK server - which appears to be in Scotland). Tried it on my Android TV and it didn’t work with BBC iPlayer and like most other VPNs it dropped out when I exit a particular app.

I disagree with some “experts”. I have used F-Secure for many years, and I find their service excellent and trustworthy. Many “experts” point out one instance involving German officials obtaining logs on a customer, which F-Secure followed up and had them destroyed. What if this German customer was an arch-villain, suspected of heinous acts? Finland has always been known to be a trusted partner in Privacy. On the other hand, accolades are given to ExpressVPN, yet they are in U.S. Virgin Islands…a U.S. territory which I am sure if U.S. officials wanted logs on an average citizen, they would only need to breathe hard on Express VPN to obtain them. I would suggest to take “expert” recommendations with a grain of salt. I used ExpressVPN briefly and my Bluetooth was being constantly hacked.

It seemed to work fine on Android (Phone) from France on a holiday earlier this year. I had my suspicions about the Google TV itself or the Proton app for it for some time, but others seem to get it to work just fine. Until I moved, I thought the router in my old flat was producing errors because of package loss or something like that.

Interersting, it works flawlessly for BBC iPlayer on the standard UK setting for me. The UI is unncessarily bloated, though.

ProtonVPN has trouble while running on Google TV? F-Secure VPN is also running on Google TV?

Yes, both run on the same TV on the same Chromecast on the same network

It must be bad software implementation.
