I am looking to get a VPN that works well and smoothly on Mac OS as most don’t. There are also a shitton of shills and bots on here promoting all types of VPN’s that are garbage but they somehow pop up in every discussion. The most prominent one is Nord VPN, a ton of people recommend this one for Mac and apple products, but I know from firsthand experience that this VPN is dogshit! Anyone have any decent recommendations for Mac OS specifically?
Well I am glad you already know to stay away from NordVPN. That one is not only bad for Mac, it’s just putrid in general on all devices, and their IP’s get blacklisted a lot. I don’t see any circumstances in which that VPN is tolerable even in the slightest. For me, Surfshark has ran the smoothest on Mac.
All the popular ones have applications for PC, mac and Linux BUT they’re not all good on all platforms. Most of the time they run way better on Windows than Mac but in some cases (like is the case with Mullvad) it can run way smoother and better on Mac than on anything else.
Proton VPN is really really good but slightly more costly than many other VPN’s. However if you lock in a long term deal it’s still really cheap and in my opinion, totally worth it. I can’t think of many VPN providers I have tried that are better than this one honestly.
I hope you aren’t looking to use a free VPN, cause none of the free ones are worth using. Even Proton VPN which once had a decent free product has gone downhill a lot. But the application still works smoothly on mac so if you go for the paid option, it’s one to consider for Mac.
I have tested most of the providers, including Pure, Nord, and Express VPN, but Private Internet Access (PIA) is my go-to VPN. Regardless of the country chosen, the connection speeds are lightning fast and extremely reliable. I know many people recommend Pure here, but I just cancelled my subscription with them because the server speeds would slow to a crawl, forcing me to spend a lot of time switching servers to find a better one.
I have tried about 7 or 8 since VPN’s became a thing many years ago and I’m always testing new ones when a subscription is expiring since they all offer trials or refunds at this point.
Of the ones I have tried, the only ones I’d keep my subscription with are Surfshark, Mullvad, and Proton VPN. All the other ones have glaring holes that I’m not willing to put up with.
I am also looking for a VPN to use long term but I’ve been having a hard time sticking to one. I used Cyberghost and express on mac and on my iPhone, and i wasn’t a fan of either. Slow to connect and I was always prompted to prove I’m not a robot which tells me that the IP’s were abused.
Mac devices are already very safe and secure. But a reliable VPN will help to increase the security of mac devices. It will protect your online security. So, if you can still want to use VPN with mac OS then, I would like to prefer you must check here is the list of best VPNs for Mac. You can definitely compare all good VPN services.
First off, it’s all about optimization, you see. Some VPN providers might prioritize developing their apps for more popular platforms like Windows or iOS, leaving the Mac version with a bit less love and attention. So, you might end up with a clunkier app that doesn’t perform as well as its counterparts.
Then there’s the matter of hardware and software compatibility. Macs have their own unique architecture and operating system, which means the VPN app needs to be fine-tuned to work seamlessly with it. If the developers haven’t put in the effort to optimize for macOS, you might face issues like slower connection speeds or occasional dropouts.
Another thing to consider is the number of servers available for Mac users. Some VPN providers might have a smaller network or fewer servers dedicated to Mac users, which can lead to overcrowding and reduced performance.
Lastly, it’s possible that certain Mac models or versions of macOS might have compatibility issues with certain VPN protocols or encryption methods. This can affect the overall smoothness of the VPN connection.
Now, don’t get me wrong, it’s not like every VPN is shit on Mac. Many reputable providers offer smooth experiences on macOS as well. But you gotta be careful and choose one that has a solid reputation for Mac compatibility and performance.
Good to know, I thought Nord was one of better VPN’s. All my friends seem to use that one and I hear it being talked about quite a bit online. Is Proton’s free version worth using at all?
+1 for Surfshark. Easy to use, cheap, lots of Geo’s and good support. It is like how Nord was back in the day, when it was good (and which built the reputation nord has today, which is still a positive one despite it sucking now).
PureVPN showed it keeps logs despite saying it doesn’t. ProtonVPN is pure garbage. Mullvad is good. Don’t know much about surfshark.
What do you mean by how smooth they run? Are you talking about the application itself or the speeds of using other apps while the VPN is running in the background?
ProtonVPN is horrible if you’re not on Windows.
It has crossed my mind, I don’t need the VPN to run 24/7 so I don’t really want to pay if I don’t have to. But I do understand the issue with freemium services so I’m not hellbent on using something free if there’s no good option.
Yeah protons free VPN was somewhat usable up until 2017-18, then it got started getting abused into oblivion. Now nothing free works unless all you’re doing is a simple google search. At that point, you might as well just use Tor.
Aren’t a lot of the IPs with PIA blacklisted? I haven’t used it in a few years but back then it blocked me on all the sites so I gave up.
Mullvad seems fairly good, people have been recommending it to me quite a bit. Also like the fact that they don’t have a bunch of bots promoting it like is the case with NordVPN, so i’m gonna take it into consideration.
That’s a big problem for me too and why i want to hear what others are saying.
