Hi all,As the subject, I am looking for Router (or access point ) that support openvpn /wireguard client to make all LAN client connect through the VPN. However, I do not see any option that under 250$ that serve my purpose well. Do you guys know any router like that?
The requirement is the speed of LAN client will have 80% speed of a VPN connect directly in a PC. My internet speed is about 130 Mbps (using fast.com). VPN Client PC usually reach 100 Mbps. I hope the VPN router can serve about 80Mbps .
UPDATE 1: Nano Pi R5s works like a charm. But I wonder if any wifi ap can do the same performance as nano pi r5s.
However, I do not see any option that under 250$ that serve my purpose well.
Any mediocre router with a cpu above 1 GHz will easily make 200+ mbps on Wireguard. Hell, even a NanoPi R4S would suit your needs and beyond.
If 250$ is your budget then you can afford x86 which performs the best (wifi coverage being only downfall with just 2 antennas). Basically a mini fanless computer. Wireguard is all about single core frequency, so the higher the better. Although that might be overkill It’s more future proof in case you want to upgrade your bandwidth and it doesn’t hurt to have as much clearance as possible when multiple clients are connecting at the same time.
My recommendation: Because your bandwith are a mere 130mbps I would keep it simple and go with a Asus RT-AX86U router + Merlin fw 388.2 as it supports Wireguard + Killswitch. GUI and setup are as simple as they can get. And as you intend to only use this as a VPN router it does not matter that Wireguard disables NAT acceleration (slows down speed for normal internet).
Take a look at the pcWRT router. It supports three VPN protocols: OpenVPN, IKEv2 and WireGuard. Both client and server. You can create multiple SSIDs and having some go through the VPN, some without VPN. There’s a builtin ad blocker too.

Do you mean NanoPi R5S? Well, yes It can handle 600+ mbps on Wireguard but it has no yet have official support for OpenWRT only the custom version called FriendlyWrt. But that works also, there is a guide howto setup Wireguard on R5S here. Not sure how killswitches works for it, if that’s what you also need. You’ll have to look those things up yourself.
