Seems like the most recommended hardware to set up a home vpn server around this subreddit is the Raspberry Pi. I’m going to be setting myself with a home vpn server soon and was just wondering if there are any disadvantages to using an RPi, and if anyone recommends any gear over it.
An RPi works fine for a VPN server, but it takes sometime and some work to set it up, and if you don’t own one already, they have gotten expensive and hard to find due to shortages. An AR300m16 from GL iNet comes configured with an OpenVPN or Wireguard server, and in the US you can get them from Amazon for around $30. I am using an AR300m for my VPN server that I put at a family members house. It works great to give me a home US IP address as I wander around the world.
Asking here instead of creating a new thread since this is related:
Will a travel router from GL.inet work like mango or beryl for the vpn server? I have a beryl that I’m using as a client. I’m using a commercial vpn now but thinking of setting up my home vpn server. I’ll be working out of a home in another country so I can buy a GL home router too but wondering if 2 travel router will compromise on the latency or speed in any way.
