Hi, I just installed pi hole for a week and I’m loving it. Now I want ad blocking when I’m away from home. Do you have any vpn recommendations? Thanks in advance!
PiVPN with WireGuard.
OpenVPN is what I use for this purpose
I set this up last night (and tested in the wild today). I read the 3 or so guides on PiVPN website, spun up a new Ubuntu server VM, installed PiVPN, generates a new user config in PiVPN, installed on iPhone with the QR code, then changed the config within Wireguard on the iPhone to only allow Pi-Hole IP’s for DNS.
I did the above expecting to fail and have to start again with a new VM (having tried WireGuard twice in the past). PiVPN made it very easy
Thanks, I’ll check this out
Edit: Does this have any advantages over OpenVPN?
I’ve heard there are faster alternatives than OpenVPN, is that true?
Yep, it’ll give you the option to choose during set up. I’ve found WireGuard to be great. I have the WireGuard app on my phone setup to always connect when I’m on cellular. I get ad blocking and local access to my network with much less battery use than OpenVPN which would sometimes make my phone heat up. With auto connect on cellular enabled, it’s set it and forget it
The WireGuard protocol was integrated into the Linux Kernel as of 5.6, so I’d say it’s got first class support.
Since he’s been downvoted every single time and isn’t posting this anymore - credit to AtariDump:
Don’t use WireGuard if you value privacy; it’s not been independent audited to be free of bugs and/or issues.
WireGuard is unfinished software that people are trusting to secure communications between devices and their own endpoint running on networks that have to be considered as hostile until proven otherwise. Software like this (based upon encryption and obfuscating communications) can not and should not be trusted until it’s been independently vetted/verified to be free of bugs/issues.
Yes, it’s being integrated into the Linux kernel but that still doesn’t mean it’s actually secure.
Until the software devs remove this info from their site it’s still valid.
I agree PiVPN does make the setup of WireGuard easier to implement, and I do like the QR code feature. It is very fast at connecting as well.
Performance, stability, configuration, convenience, simplicity, reliability, etc.
I’ve been working as an OpenVPN admin since 2014, and it only took a day or so of using WireGuard to fall in love with it.
OpenVPN has its advantages (such as getting past some blocks by using TCP/443 and user authentication plugin support that lets me use Active Directory), but if you’re just setting up VPN for yourself (or just a few users), WireGuard will just work better.
Does this have any advantages over OpenVPN?
I’ve read/heard that the WireGuard app is not as resource heavy on the mobile device.
My cell reception sucks in my neighborhood but here’s the results https://imgur.com/a/hD34rTE
Stay away from WireGuard.
Dunno. I don’t have any issues with it. I’d send you a speed test but I’m on my WiFi so it would be redundant to vpn into my home network from my home network
Hi! Do you use an iPhone? There seems to be no option to configure always connect when on cellular on WireGuard Android
Why stay away from WireGuard?
I just started using it, and it’s been working well for me.
Ok, thanks for the help! I think I’ll try this!
