Hi everyone!

I need to set up a VPN on my router.

I bought an Asus router (RT-AX58U) and tried to set up a VPN client (I tried all available protocols on my Asus router), but nothing worked. Endless connection process. As I understand, my ISP uses DPI filters to identify VPN protocols and block them.

Seems. I need OpenVPN over Shadowsocks, WireGuard over Xray, or WireGuard through an Xray. I successfully use Amnezia VPN via Xray on my PC and phone, but how can I set up this type of connection on my router?

So,

  1. Can I set up a VPN over Shadowsocks/Xray on my ASUS router with stock software? If I can, how?
  2. If I can’t, I should re-flash my router with OpenWrt/ DD-WRT/ Tomato, right?. Which is most accessible for set up/ better?

Try to find and learn the koolshare firmware for asus. There is a something called a softcenter where you can get plugin for shadowsocks and so on. Also check fancyss. But it is mostly Chinese info.

Unfortunately, OpenWrt isn’t supported for your specific router model (RT-AX58U), so your options are a bit limited if you want to stick with your current hardware. A more straightforward approach would be to use a small mini PC or a Raspberry Pi as a dedicated VPN gateway in front of your router. You could install Ubuntu/Linux on it and run V2Ray/Xray or an SSL proxy to handle the VPN traffic. This setup would allow you to connect your router to this gateway, sharing the VPN-protected connection with your entire network.
