Are VPN’s on iOS necessary?

Give me all the reasons why I should fork over $$ for an iOS VPN. The obvious reason is privacy, but that’s so vague. What’s my exposure by not using one? Do I need it on cellular or just public Wi-Fi?

When you’re using cellular data I don’t see a need for a VPN unless you’re trying to get around either a cellular carriers HD video block or doing something sketchy. On a public wifi there’s a case to be made for privacy, but with how far unlimited data has come it’s kinda made public wifi more irrelevant as the time goes on, except for a bigger events where the cellular data is very slow due to congestion, or poor reception. (I’m just talking about on iPhones though, if you’re bringing your laptop to a Starbucks to do work, then a vpn probably isn’t a bad idea)

If you absolutely need a VPN, you’ll know (e.g. journalists). Public WiFi is notorious, but with most of the internet going to HTTPS, that problem has disappeared mostly. Getting in (content limited to source domain, e.g. scientific articles to university networks) or out (my work blocks some news websites, for some unknown reason) of a corporate network or getting into a country are the only two reasons I use a VPN.

I only use a vpn to bootleg UFC fights
