What do you mean? is its design superior or more safe than they other VPN providers? I have heard of the Tor network, which to my knowledge (and simply said) a bunch of ‘nodes’ where different IPs are used to redirect and allocate a false IP, but nevertheless it still is possible for tracking if Big brother if persistent enough (i.e. they can eventually find your location and IP if they really want to). Please do correct me if I am completely off here.
Last year, Elon also reposted a Tweet recommending the 10 “best” VPNs for accessing X, lol, and Proton was on it. 100% do NOT trust.

There isn’t an easy, or even a single, answer to that. A big part of it is understanding who your adversary is, and what their capabilities are or might be. Based on that analysis you decide howto proceed. (Hiding from HBO or Disney while torrenting a movie is quite a different proposition than hiding from the NSA while hacking into the DoD.)
How often and how long also matter. A one-time hack while sitting in a hotel room using the neighboring bank WiFi is pretty well untraceable, even without VPNs or Tor, , at least from a network perspective. Repeatedly trying to hack into the DoD from a home in the USA will probably result in you being caught regardless of what you do.
I am not a hacker, but I do work with large networks. The tools available to us are quite powerful, I can only imagine what is available to AT&T or the NSA. It takes a lot of learning, there is no shortcut. In addition to networking and hacking, general “spy tradecraft” has a lot of useful concepts.
It’s a relay of proxies (not a VPN) operated by thousands of volunteers, myself included.
You don’t get a false IP. You just appear as the IP address of the exit node/relay. By design the exit relay only knows who the previous relay is.
If you disclose your actual IP somehow through the encrypted relays then of course you’ll be exposed but that’s the same as anything.

Yep, the authoritahs really like when you use the same setup over and over. If they are even looking for you, they get closer each time. It is like keeping someone on the line in the old days for a phone trace.
You can’t really differentiate between people who don’t get caught because nobody mart enough is looking for them, and those who don’t get caught because they have good technique. Most that don’t get caught is because nobody with any skill is bothering to look for them, IMO.
