I travel a ton for work and want to be able to watch Bruins and Red Sox games on the road with me, but the NESN app is region locked to New England. I have NordVPN right now, but no Boston based servers. Anyone had luck with a VPN to be able to use NESN outside of New England?
Probably more involved than you want, but I run an OpenVPN server on my home network and tunnel all my traffic there when I travel.
PIA (Private Internet Access) and Windscribe both have Boston servers.
Setting up your own would be the best and safest option but Octane VPN has servers based in Boston that you can pick from
For what you are looking to do some streaming providers are starting to also pull location from your browser or phone that you will also have manually change to something in the area , I had to do that in chrome in the past
Surf Shark shows a Boston location in it’s app.
NordVPN? Were you influenced by an advertisement?
Azure allows for region changing, I… think.
Haven’t tried it for NESN, but I was bummed when I tried to use it to watch BBC. “You are unable to access this content through a VPN. Please disconnect from your VPN and try again.”
Hey, I’m also looking for a VPN with Boston servers. Did you end up finding anything good?
You don’t even need a server, your router probably can act as a VPN gateway.
Used to use pia. Not sure about how it is now, but I’ve no complaints about my time with it.
Sweet! Gonna give that a free trial and test it out when I’m back on the road.
Azure and other clouds have their own set of IPs. And if NESN’s software is any good, they’ll pick up that a cloud IP is trying to stream content that a residential or cellular IP should be.
I’ve found that trying to use cloud infrastructure can get blocked for these sorts of things.
Went with Surfshark, has a nice app on Firestick and does have a Boston based server!
Yeah that would be easier. I already had a whole VM environment on my home network so it made more sense to just spin that up. Gives me more control and security since I just have the ISPs router
Then perhaps one of these
Awesome. I use PIA. I just assumed that if one didn’t work, none would. Thanks for reminding me never to assume anything!
Looks like the free trial thing no longer exists.
Well there is your problem, you can get a prosumer to pro grade router for like $75 and maybe another $100 for a WAP. Plus lord knows they charge a hell of a rental fee for it anyway.
I have a controller and a number of Aruba APs throughout the house. I own the router it was just provided by the ISP, never really looked into consumer / pro-sumer routers. I just let it hand off the internet and I run firewalls and other servers.
You have Aruba APs in your house lol? Steal them from work? But if you got the VM space and your running your firewalls through VM why do you have a physical router then? Just have the firewall do the routing, something like opnsense or pfsense.
