Accessing PPTP VPN Server from mobile

I have a machine running on my home network that I’ve set up a simple file server on using my router’s PPTP VPN feature and a custom DDNS name. I have users created on both my windows file system and through the router. I am able to access my server from anywhere using a windows 10 machine, however I’d like the option to access it from any Android/iOS device and I haven’t had much luck. I have tried using FTP and SMB as solutions with no luck, which in all fairness could be my lack of experience with either service.

Any ideas on how to accomplish this or a general direction I should go? Thank you!

Please replace that pptp VPN server with something more robust. It literally takes less than 5 minutes to break into it.

You need a vpn client installed on the mobile device. Apparently, ios/appstore stopped support for pptp years ago because of vulnerability they said.

You’ll need to use a VPN that mobile phones can still connect to.

See if your router supports OpenVPN, and use that if so.

If not, you can try find a cheap raspberry pi 2, 3 or 4, and install DietPi, selecting ‘wireguard server’. And run wireguard.

As for those file services; once you’re on a VPN they should just work, using the internal IP addresses, as if you were at home.

Instead of PPTP, I’d suggest Wireguard.

PiVPN is great for this. Install the Wireguard app and connect. Easy and secure.
